HOLLAND, Mich. – Derek Bosko captured his second individual event title and he helped the 400-yard freestyle relay team to a dominating victory as Albion College capped a successful run in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Swimming & Diving Championships.
Bosko led the 100 freestyle from the start and won the event by nearly a second over Calvin's Mitch Schroder. Bosko's winning time was 45.87 seconds, and teammate David Alday was third in 47.01.
Bosko and Alday joined Sebastian Tostado and Parker Belmore in the freestyle relay. Tostado's 45.85 leadoff split put the Britons in front by nearly two seconds and they finished nearly six seconds ahead of Hope. Albion set a NCAA Division III Championship 'B' cut and Holland Aquatic Center pool record time of 3:02.40.
"The relay was a total team effort," Albion Head Coach Jake Taber said. "Sebastian took us out and we never looked back."
Albion ended the meet in fourth place in the team standings, 19 points behind third-place Hope College and 49 behind second-place Kalamazoo College. The Britons were one of the leading teams when it came to first-place performances, earning gold medals in seven events.
The 1,650 freestyle was a productive event as the Britons rolled up 46 points. Blake Blair (16:47.24) and Kyle Harvey (17:12.94) finished in the top seven, with Andrew Mattson, Sean Pearce, Charlie Shinske, Nicholas Smith, and Thomas Martin also scoring.
Shinske also reached the championship final in the 200 backstroke where he finished seventh (1:59.21). Nicholas Depper (ninth), Nicholas Smith (12th), and Nicholas Burris (13th) scored in the consolation race.
Garret Bosworth, Thomas Martin and Sean Pearce reached the consolation of the 200 butterfly.
