BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Jessica Shaw turned in one of the best 5,000-meter performances by an Albion College woman.
The sophomore from Allegan completed the race in 17:48.57 the second-fastest time ever recorded by an Albion woman. Shaw, who became the first woman to represent Albion in the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championship in the fall, won the event in the Birmingham Southern Invitational by nearly a minute over Calvin's Hope Gaffner.
Megan Wickens finished sixth in the 5,000-meter race, reaching the finish in 19:09.27.
Maicey Peterson continues to improve in the pole vault. The sophomore from Clarkson cleared the bar at 10 feet to finish third in the meet. Peterson achieved a clearance at 9' 8" in Savannah, Ga., a week ago. If Peterson continues to perform well, she may challenge for the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association championship after a clearance of 10' ½" won the event last spring.
Camille Sawicki and Katie Clark finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the triple jump. Sawicki sailed 32' 2 ¼" on her first attempt and Clark reached 31' ½" on her second jump.
Back on the track, Leanne Wegley was seventh in the 1,500 meters (5:01.75) and 800 meters (2:23.04).
Albion's next competition is the Viking Olympics, scheduled for March 27-28 in Rock Island, Ill.
