ALBION, Mich. – Emily Cefarratti and Amanada Davio scored five times in the last 4:46 of the game as Calvin College stunned Albion College, 15-14, in a matchup of two of the top women's lacrosse teams in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association.
Albion appeared to be in control after Julie Wood scored her third goal of the day to put Albion up 14-10 with less than eight minutes remaining in the game.
Albion Head Coach Shanta Loecker called timeout after Cefarratti and Davio scored to cut the margin to two with three minutes remaining in the game.
"During the timeout we talked about really focusing on having possession for the last minutes and some and it had to start with the draw and we struggled with that in the second half," Loecker said.
Despite the setback, Albion had a number of highlights. Julie Wood dished out two assists to finish the day with five points. Cait Gaitley, Kadie Koolwick and Mackanzie Novak produced three goals apiece. Goalkeeper Victoria Della Pia collected 18 saves.
The Britons, 8-2 overall and 2-1 against MIAA rivals, will look to take the lessons learned from the game toward a Wednesday night date at Kalamazoo College.
"There were no glaring effort mistakes. Our team worked so hard the entire game no one gave up or let up. Once we learn how to use our work ethic then we have to nitpick and think about our execution mistakes," Loecker said. "The biggest thing we can learn from this game is we have to put effort and execution together."
