Box Score HOLLAND, Mich. – Mackenzie Novak scored three goals and dished out two assists and Kadie Koolwick and Julie Wood produced two goals apiece as Albion College built a 12-2 halftime lead and coasted to a 16-4 victory over Hope College in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association women's lacrosse contest.
The teams will meet again at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in a MIAA Tournament semifinal on the Schmidt-Fraser Field inside Albion's Sprankle-Sprandel Stadium. Admission will be $7 for adults and $5 for youth. Students from MIAA institutions who present valid identification will be admitted free.
"I'm proud of the way this team maintained a focus on our goals throughout the second half of the season," Head Coach Shanta Loecker said. "We stayed in the moment, never got caught up looking at the scoreboard and improved every game.
"While the score of today's match looks lopsided, it didn't feel that way," Loecker added. "We really worked hard and I credit the team for hustling. We consistently played great midfield defense to keep possession. Kit Maher marked one of their stronger midfielders to interrupt their transition opportunities."
Koolwick and Wood scored in first 2:48 of the contest as Albion never trailed. Koolwick and Lauren Wiegand scored goals 1:40 apart as the Britons led 4-1 with 18 minutes left in the first half.
Albion reeled off an eight-goal run to build the large halftime lead. Novak started the run with her first goal of the contest, and she assisted on goals by Ashley Glenn and Shannon Kahl.
Koolwick scored three times in the second half and Kit Maher tallied Albion's final goal.
Evidence of the hustle Loecker talked about came from the 32 ground balls picked up by the Britons, with Kahl collecting eight and Glenn getting six.
