ALBION, Mich. – Angela Morrison and Jessica Shaw achieved runner-up performances on the first day of competition in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association's Field Day at the Elkin Isaac Track.

Shaw broke the school record in the 10,000 meters for the second week in a row, completing her race in 36:51.40 and shaving nearly 20 seconds off the time she established at Hillsdale last weekend (37:10.16). She raced on Julia Stock's shoulder for the first 24 minutes, but the Hope College athlete pulled away for a winning time of 36:40.85.

Morrison achieved a personal best in finishing second in the high jump. Morrison and Hope's Jane Pearson cleared the bar at 5' ½", but Morrison was awarded second place based on fewer misses. Morrison will have an opportunity to add more points to Albion's total tomorrow after qualifying eighth in the 100-meter hurdles. She raced to a time of 15.90 seconds in the preliminary heat.

Alyssa Wright exceeded the school record in finishing third in the hammer throw. Her best attempt sailed 149' 9".

Also scoring in field events Thursday was Sarah Kirchner with a sixth-place throw of 114' in the discus and Maicey Peterson after she cleared the bar at 9' 3" in the pole vault for seventh place. Peterson will also have an opportunity to add points tomorrow after qualifying fourth in the 100-meter hurdles (15.57 seconds).

In other Thursday preliminaries, Leanne Wegley turned in the third-best time in the 800 meters with a season-best effort of 2:19.18.

Albion collected 27 points Thursday to sit in fourth place in the team standings. Calvin is atop the team standings at 91 ½ points, followed by Hope (55.83) and Trine (35).

Friday field events start with the men's and women's triple jump and women's shot put at 10 a.m. Track events begin with the steeplecase at 1:30 p.m.
