Box Score ANGOLA, Ind. – While it's only the first contest of the second half of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association season, Albion College's 2-1 victory over Trine University may well become the signature moment if the Britons qualify for the league tournament.
Despite controlling the action early, Ryan Bosse powered Trine to the lead with five minutes left in the first half.
Albion produced a second half comeback as Kyle Bourlier converted a penalty kick and Aaron Smit hit the ball into the bottom corner of the net while sliding to the turf.
"I challenged the guys that we would need to have to come from behind at some point," Albion Head Coach Wytse Molenaar said after his team improved to 6-6 overall and 5-3 against MIAA rivals. "I told them this may be our biggest win of the season because it was tough. Trine competed hard and we had to show real grit."
Molenaar said defender Andrew Prince and midfielders Kyle Johnson and Bobby Budlong were working on a good sequence of passes, and that led to Budlong being taken down in the box. Bourlier put the penalty kick in for his team-leading fifth goal of the season.
The score remained level until Smit scored with four minutes left in regulation. It was the first collegiate goal for the junior from Hamilton.
Albion goalkeeper Justin Kraft made three saves.
Albion will play both of its league contests at home next week, as it challenges Olivet College Tuesday night at 7 o'clock and Adrian College Saturday at 4 p.m.
