Box Score SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Seniors Kadie Koolwick and Julie Wood achieved career milestones as Albion College remained undefeated in games against its Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association women's lacrosse rivals with a 14-4 victory over Saint Mary's College.
Koolwick, a senior from Bloomfield, Mich., and Wood, a senior from from Farmington, Mich., produced four goals apiece as each reached 150 points for their careers. In addition, Wood's third goal was the 100th of her career. Wood is one of four players in the history of the Briton women's lacrosse program to score 100 career goals.
Alyssa Brooks, a first-year student-athlete from Howell, Mich., produced her third goal of the season and Koolwick and Wood scored as Albion built a 3-0 lead and never trailed.
Albion ripped off another three-goal run later in the first half as Shannon Kahl, Isabel Fontana and Ariella Ruiz scored as the Britons extended the margin to 7-2 with 10 ½ minutes left in the first half.
Albion built the lead to 11-3 as Wood scored with seconds remaining in the first half, Koolwick tacked on two goals in the first seven minutes of the second half and Ruiz produced her second goal of the day.
Wood, Koolwick, and Cait Gaitley completed Albion's scoring for the day.
Goalkeeper Victoria Della Pia had another strong performance, stopping 15 of the 19 shots she faced. Her save percentage has been at least 73 percent in each of the last three games.
Della Pia received support from Fontana who scooped up seven groundballs and caused five turnovers. Taylor Nelson and Koolwick finished with four groundballs apiece.
"There was solid, feet-first defense from Taylor Nelson and Mikaela Ray and that was central to our defensive effort," Head Coach Shanta Loecker said. "Shannon Kahl and Kadie Koolwick took control of the midfield.
"Give respect to Saint Mary's," Loecker added. "They have some really talented players and they worked hard in the heat. It was a closer game than it looks."
Albion, 5-6 overall and 4-0 against MIAA rivals, returns home Wednesdayfor a 7 o'clock game against Kalamazoo College.
