Box Score ALBION, Mich. – Head Coach Shanta Loecker said Albion College played its best game of the season Saturday as it dispatched Alma College, 17-4, in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association women's lacrosse contest.
Loecker credited goalkeeper Victoria Della Pia, defender Isabel Fontana, midfielder Kadie Koolwick and attacker Julie Wood with providing leadership despite the highly charged emotions associated with playing on senior day.
"The four seniors executed their roles," Loecker said. "There was a lot distracting them and they did their jobs so well."
Della Pia set the tone early, making nine saves in the first 17 minutes of the contest. The Scots had three free position shots early, but were denied each time.
Della Pia finished with 12 saves, her second-most in a game this season, and a season-best 75 percent save percentage.
"She set the tone – mentally and emotionally," Loecker said of her goalkeeper from Ajax, Ontario.
Della Pia did receive support from Shannon Kahl, who Loecker singled out for her effort in slowing Alma in transition. Kahl also helped the offense with a pair of goals.
Cait Gaitley led the offense with a career-high seven goals, giving her 12 for the first week of league play. Wood chipped in with three goals, Koolwick was credited with two goals and 10 draw controls and Fontana added a goal and an assist.
"It's the most unselfish play I've seen from the group all season," Loecker said. "Anytime someone made a mistake there was a teammate who had her back."
Though off to a 2-0 start against league rivals, the road does not get any easier for Albion. The Britons have a Tuesday date at Calvin College, the defending league champion and preseason favorite. The draw is set for 4 p.m.
