ALBION, Mich. – Albion College shutout Alma College in the second half as it pulled away for a 12-5 victory over Alma College in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Men's Lacrosse Tournament championship game.
Albion, 13-4 overall, secured back-to-back MIAA regular season and tournament championships. The Britons will receive its assignment for the NCAA Division III Championship during the selection show to be broadcast on ncaa.com Sunday night at 9.
Dylan Neal, Kyle DeCamp, Brandon Lebioda, and David DiRado scored as Albion finished the first quarter with a 4-1 lead.
Jake Ellens scored twice and Alma also got goals from Quentin Ellis and Marshall Argenta as the Scots forged a 5-5 tie with 1:18 left in the second quarter.
Albion got a momentum boost when John Cooke scored with four seconds left to keep the Britons in front, 6-5, at halftime.
Albion Head Coach Jake DeCola said his message at halftime was simple: the Britons had to play better. And the Britons did just that, holding a 30-9 edge in shots in the second half and DeCamp won all eight face-offs.
"I told the fellas that we were not playing smart because we let nerves get to us," DeCola said. "I challenged our group to buckle down and make our opponent work for anything they were going to get because we gave up things that were too easy."
Neal tacked on Albion's first two goals of the third quarter to finish the night with three to go along with two assists. Braun, Cooke and DiRado also scored in the second half as all had two goals in the game.
"Dylan got us going out of the gate and DeCamp showed once again how dominant he can be."
Goalkeeper Brad Bogus made seven saves and defender Dave Brown caused three turnovers for the Britons.
