Box Score ALBION, Mich. – The Albion College men's soccer team gave the Davis Athletic Complex a grand opening Tuesday afternoon, turning back Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association rival, 6-0.
It was the first men's contest in the facility that opened with a Sept. 4 women's match.
"We wanted to come out with a bang and make a statement for our senior," Bobby Budlong, a senior forward who was credited with a goal and an assist, said.
Kyle Johnson, Erik Vanfossen and Jacob Windle produced their first goals at the collegiate level, and Kyle Bourlier struck for his team-leading fourth goal of the season. Vanfossen also dished out an assist.
After being limited to two goals in its last three matches, Albion exploded for the most goals it has scored in a match since a 6-2 victory over Rochester College to open the 2015 season. It was Albion's highest scoring output over a MIAA rival since a 6-1 victory at Adrian College on Oct. 25, 2014.
"We were just putting everything in the back of the net," Budlong said. "We had 11 shots on goal and six went in. We were putting teammates in the right spots and we were finding the right opportunities to play each other through."
It was the first shutout for Albion since a 3-0 victory over Olivet College last season. Justin Kraft played the first 67 minutes, collecting two saves before giving way to Chris Wallace.
Albion will play its next two contests against MIAA rivals on the road. The Britons will start to rack up the miles Saturday when they travel to Olivet College for 2:30 p.m. contest.
"We're not going to dwell on our win today," Budlong said.
