Garland's career night gives MBB win

Box Score

ALBION, Mich. -- For the second time in as many games, the Albion College men's basketball team's offense shined, pouring in 95 points in a 95-85 win over Olivet College. Junior Cortez Garland stole the show, dropping a career-high 37 points while dishing out six assists. His six assists also sets a new career-high.

Sharp-shooter MJ Barnes added 17 points, including a 5 of 9 mark from three. 14 of Barnes's 17 points came in the second half. Caden Ebeling was the only other Briton in double figures, scoring 13 points while bringing down nine boards.

Albion improves to 2-0 on the young season. The Comets slip to 0-8.

After a tight-knit 18 minutes, Albion found its groove. Clinging to a 33-31 lead, the Britons used a 13-7 run to extend their lead over the visitors. Garland drained a pair of threes in the run. Late Olivet free throws cut into the Briton lead, but Albion held a 46-40 lead at the break.

Explosive out of the half, Garland scored the first seven points to force Olivet into a timeout. The Comets answered with two buckets before another small run prevented any Comet momentum. Layups from Ebeling and Devin Holmes coupled with another Barnes triple pushed Albion ahead, 62-44.

Once again, Olivet found an answer. The Comets used an 11-1 lead to trim the Albion lead back to single digits with 11:49 to play.

Garland, Barnes and Ebeling all provided Albion with points, followed by a putback from Justin McAbee. McAbee hauled in seven rebounds and contributed five points.

With 6:07 on the clock, an Olivet 3-pointer cut the Albion lead to nine points. Just like every time before, Barnes had an answer with a trey of his own off a kick out from Holmes. Albion would hold a double-digit lead for the remainder of the contest.

Ebeling iced the win with a thunderous dunk off a beautiful feed from Juwan Perry. Perry added three assists and three steals in the win.

On an efficient shooting night, Albion converted on 50 percent of its field goal attempts. The Britons capitalized on Comet mistakes, scoring 21 points off 19 Olivet turnovers.

The men will have a quick turnaround as they are currently scheduled to host Hope College on Monday evening. Tip off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
