ALBION -- Bolstered by a game-high 22 points by
Elena Welker, the Albion College women's basketball team cruised to a 75-50 win over Heidelberg University in their home opener. All 10 players that checked into the game for the Britons scored at least one point.
Three other Albion players scored in double figures --
Lolo Reed (12),
Riley Davis (11) and
Dareonna Little (10).
For the first time since 2019, Albion opens the season 3-0. Heidelberg falls to 1-3 on the young season.
The end of the first quarter saw the Britons holding a 17-13 lead. The momentum began shifting Albion's way in the second quarter, scoring a blistering 26 points in the period.
Five points out of the gate from Reed pushed the lead to nine and forced the Student Princes to call timeout. A trey by the Berg was not enough to halt the run, as Albion rattled off the next eight points for a 29-16 lead with six minutes to play in the first half.
The Britons later closed out the final four minutes of the half on another run, this one a 14-5 run. Highlighting the scoring was seven straight points from Davis followed by a Welker three. A 3-pointer at the horn by Heidelberg brought the score to 43-23 at the half.
Albion's lead would be plenty, as the Britons held total control for the remainder of the contest.
Both Reed and Davis grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Davis also blocked three shots for the Brits.
Welker dished out a game-high five assists. Reed and
Cierra Cole added four apiece. All 10 Albion steals came from four players -- Welker (3), Cole (3), Reed (2) and
Nicole Sweetland (2).
The Britons turned 23 Student Prince turnovers into 24 points. Although Albion committed 21 turnovers, the Berg was unable to cash in, scoring just seven points off Briton miscues. 50 of Albion's 75 points came inside the paint. Heidelberg mustered just 20 points in the paint.
Albion had the hot hand on the floor, connecting on 53 percent of its field goals, including nearly 55 percent from three. Welker was a perfect 4 of 4 from beyond the arc in the win.
This was the first matchup between the two teams since 2013, where Heidelberg defeated the Britons, 69-62.
The Britons will take on another OAC opponent on Saturday when they travel to John Carroll. Tip off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
