CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A late run by John Carroll cost the Albion College women's basketball team in a 75-66 loss to the Blue Streaks on Saturday afternoon. The loss hands the Brits their first one of the season, moving to 3-1 overall.
Sophomore
Riley Davis led Albion with 18 points. Classmate
Dareonna Little added 14 points and seven rebounds, while
Lolo Reed scored 11 points and brought down eight boards.
Senior captain
Cierra Cole scored nine points and recorded eight steals for the Britons.
A triple from Davis midway through the first gave the visitors a 7-2 lead. JCU had an answer, working its way back to take a 13-12 lead. In the waning seconds of the period, an
Elena Welker layup vaulted Albion ahead, 14-13 at the end of one.
A back and forth second quarter saw the Britons boost their lead to as many as five points, but the Blue Streaks kept the contest close. Albion held a slim 31-28 lead at halftime.
After JCU tied the game at 35 with a three, Davis answered with a 3-pointer immediately at the other end. In the third, Albion took a 40-39 lead and scored six straight points off buckets by three different players -- Davis, Little and
Romee Natschke -- building the lead to seven.
The Blue Streaks answered with a 10-2 run, taking the lead late in the third quarter. The two teams headed into the final period tied up at 53.
With 2:49 on the clock, the Blue Streaks drained a three to take an eight point lead and keep the Britons out of striking distance.
Becca Ross added 10 points off the bench.
JCU scored 24 points off 21 Albion turnovers.
The Britons return to Cleveland on Wednesday when they take on Case Western Reserve. Tip off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
