Box Score ALMA, Mich. -- In their first game in 356 days, the Albion College men's lacrosse team erased an early deficit and defeated Alma College, 16-10. Sophomore Sam Puzevic totaled eight points on the afternoon, while Jace Conley added seven.
After four minutes, the Scots had jumped out to an early 3-0 lead. Albion rattled off three goals in an 80 second span to knot the game at 3. Puzevic, Eddie Symons and Conley all found the back of the net for the Britons.
Following an Alma goal, Timmy Salinas scored for the Brits. In the waning seconds of the first quarter, the Scots scored to hold a 5-4 advantage after one.
Albion answered immediately with a five goal second quarter. Conley found Puzevic to ignite the scoring on a man up opportunity. A pair of goals by Conley were followed by goals from Puzevic and Ethan Rottell to push the visitors ahead 9-5 at halftime.
Keeping the same momentum from the second quarter, Albion added to their lead by scoring three straight to open up the third quarter. Two goals by Puzevic followed by an unassisted Brock Yabs goal gave the Brits a 12-6 lead. After an Alma goal, Grant Chaffee connected with Conley for a 13-6 lead.
Despite two goals by the Scots to close out the third, another Conley goal, this one assisted by Caleb Kropp, gave the Britons a 14-8 advantaged heading into the final quarter.
The lead would hold, as Albion added another goal from both Puzevic and Symons to give the visitors the opening day victory.
Puzevic finished the day by tying a career-high with six goals and two assists. Conley added five goals and dished out a pair of assists in the win. Symons finished with a pair of goals and an assist while Rottell chipped in with a goal and two assists in his collegiate debut.
Symons picked up nine ground balls as Chad Burton recorded seven. Joey Tatar led both teams, causing three turnovers in the win.
Junior goalie Jack Gogonis made 10 saves for the Britons.
Albion was 18 of 29 from the faceoff X. Additionally, the Brits were near-perfect on the clear (19-20).
"We are proud of our guys' work, especially the work they have done to be smart and stay safe so that we can get this game in the books," said head coach Jake DeCola. "We have a lot of work to do and we are excited to get back to practice and clean things up."
The Britons will be back in action on Mar. 6 when they travel to Alma for another non-conference contest. First faceoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
