Box Score ALBION -- For the fourth consecutive season, the Albion College men's basketball team has advanced to the MIAA Tournament semifinals. The No. 2 seeded Britons defeated Olivet College, 89-74, on Tuesday evening.
The win marks nine straight over the Comets. Albion improves to 9-3 overall, while Olivet's season comes to a close with a 2-16 record.
Junior Cortez Garland scored a game-high 27 points while grabbing eight rebounds. Senior Caden Ebeling added 23 points and brought down nine boards. Devin Holmes continued his tear on the glass, tallying a game-high 11 rebounds, bringing his season average to 7.3 rebounds per game.
Senior Juwan Perry totaled seven rebounds for the Britons.
Despite defeating Olivet twice in the regular season, the Britons fell behind early and often in the first half. With 9:19 before halftime, the Comets hit a triple to give themselves a 26-20 lead. Albion answered with five straight points from Garland, but the Comets once again built their lead to five points.
Caden Ebeling's put back with 5:28 left in the first half sparked a 12-0 run by the Britons to jump ahead, 37-30. In that stretch, Garland and MJ Barnes, the team's top threats from deep, nailed 3-pointers for the Brits.
The run helped Albion take a 39-33 lead into halftime.
Olivet slowly chipped away at the Albion lead, cutting the deficit to two points with 12:40 remaining. Another big three by Barnes off a pass by Jaylen Ross followed by an Ebling bucket and a pair of Mark Tocco free throws increased the Albion lead back to double digits.
The sharp-shooting Barnes buried a triple to put the hosts ahead, 68-59 with 5:41 on the clock. At the other end, a block by Holmes led to a transition three by Garland to put the Comets away and give the Britons a 71-59 lead with 5:15 remaining.
Protecting the ball well, Albion committed just seven turnovers in the win.
Four of the five starters dished out four assists apiece. Additionally, the starting five accounted for 75 of the 89 points.
Led by transition threes by Barnes and Garland, the Britons scored 18 points on fast breaks.
With the win, Albion will host the No. 3 seed, Hope College, on Thursday evening. Tip off is slated for 7:30 p.m. The teams split the season series, with the away team taking each matchup.
