Box Score 2 ALBION -- It's been 697 days since the Albion College softball team played on their home field. On Sunday afternoon, the Britons split a twinbill with Bluffton University. Albion was narrowly edged out in the first game 3-2, before storming back and taking game two, 10-2.
GAME ONE: Bluffton 3 Albion 2
A sloppy start by Albion proved costly, as the Beavers put up two runs off two hits and two errors in the top of the first for an early 2-0 lead.
In her first at bat on her home field of her senior season, Lauren Beougher launched a solo home run to left to lead off the bottom of the second, cutting the Bluffton lead in half. The blast was Beougher's eighth career long ball.
Albion manufactured a run in the home half of the fourth to even the score at two. Mya Nummer legged out an infield single, and moved to second on a sac bunt. Another bunt pushed Nummer to third, who was driven in when Lilly Patillo lifted a sac fly to center.
A one-out single by the Beavers was followed by a double, plating the go-ahead run.
Despite getting the leadoff hitter aboard in the bottom of the seventh, the Brits were unable to push across the tying run.
Sophomore Ashley Pion went the distance in the circle, allowing just one earned run and striking out eight, walking none.
The Britons had their chances in game one, stranding eight runners on base.
GAME TWO: Albion 10 Bluffton 2 (6 innings)
Out of the gates, Albion was ready to respond to a tough loss in the opener. Kenadie Baareman led off the game with a single to right center and stole second. Patillo knocked a two-bagger to right center, driving in Baareman to give the Brits an early lead.
Two batters later, Estacia Martinez hit a no-doubt home run to left, extending the Albion lead to 3-0 after one.
A Bluffton run in the top of the second was answered by an Albion run in the home half of the frame. Shanyn Jewell drew a walk and Felicia Maximiuk followed with a single. The pair came around to score on a two-run single by Olivia Palasek.
Martinez drove in her third run of the game, lining a double down the left field line to drive in Palasek. Albion held a 6-1 lead after two innings.
In the bottom of the fourth, Palasek singled and stole second. She advanced to third via sac bunt and scored on a Martinez sac fly -- the senior's fourth RBI of the game. Beougher followed with a single to left, plating Patillo who reached on a walk.
Beougher gave Albion its ninth run in the bottom of the sixth on a run scoring single. Jewell ended the game via mercy rule with a single to right field, securing the 10-2 win.
The Brits stole seven bases in the nightcap.
Melanie Coses (2-0) earned the win in the circle. She threw six innings of two run ball while striking out three, walking none.
Cosens and Pion combined to face 56 batters and did not walk one.
Albion will be back on their home field on Tuesday for a doubleheader against Adrian College. First pitch of game one is slated for 3 p.m.
