Box Score 2 ALBION -- It may have been delayed … three times. But when it was all said and done, the Albion College softball team earned a sweep in Friday's non conference games. The Britons defeated Olivet College, 3-0, in game one, before defeating Kalamazoo College, 4-1.
GAME ONE: Albion 3 Olivet 0
A three run second was all the Brits would need in game one as Ashley Pion (3-1) shined in the circle. Senior Grace Connolly roped a leadoff single to right center and it was followed by a double by Lauren Beougher. A walk to Skyler Herman loaded the bases with no out for Kacy Rossi.
Rossi smacked an RBI groundout to second, plating Connolly and giving the Brits a 1-0 lead.
With two on, senior Felicia Maximiuk hit a gap shot that split the outfielders in left center for a two run triple. The big blow off the bat of Maximiuk gave the Britons a 3-0 lead after two.
Pion tossed seven innings of shutout ball, allowing three hits while striking out eight. The sophomore has allowed just three earned runs through 28 innings pitched, fanning 29 and walking two.
GAME TWO: Albion 4 Kalamazoo 1
With a strong showing in the nightcap (literally), Albion was able to complete the non conference sweep. Three of the four Albion runs came in the top of the fourth.
Batting as the visitors, Herman laced a one out single to left. It was followed by a no doubt two-run blast off the bat of Kenadie Baareman, giving Albion a 2-0 lead.
The Britons plated one more in the frame, as Shanyn Jewell followed Baareman's homer with a base hit up the middle. After stealing second, Jewell came around to score off a Maximiuk single to right, giving the Brits a 3-0 advantage after three and a half.
A leadoff single by Lilly Patillo was followed by a line drive to right center from Connolly. With runners at the corners, Beougher drove a long fly ball to left, driving in pinch runner Shay Sullivan via sac fly for a 4-0 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth, Kalamazoo scored its lone run off a two out single. With two runners aboard, a sinking line drive appeared as if it would give the Hornets another run. Baareman made a diving grab in center to end the inning and deflate the Kalamazoo momentum.
Olivia Palasek and Maximiuk each had two hits in the win.
Melanie Cosens (3-1) earned the win in the circle. She threw seven innings, allowing just one run and six hits while fanning a pair.
Albion is back in action tomorrow when they travel to Calvin University for a non conference twinbill. The Brits will play Hope College at 2 p.m. followed by Calvin at 4 p.m.
