Box Score ALBION, Mich. -- Indiana, here we come.
In a marathon battle, the Albion College men's basketball team won a double overtime thriller, 87-83, over Hope College, landing a spot in Saturday's MIAA Championship game. With the win, Albion advances to face Trine -- No. 2 in the latest D3hoops.com poll -- on Saturday night.
"It's nights like these that you really just appreciate everybody who's worked really hard to allow us to play this year," said head coach Jody May. "It was an unbelievable game, they were very, very good tonight."
The charge was led by senior Caden Ebeling, who scored a team-high 26 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Classmate Juwan Perry had an unbelievable night, knocking down a career-high 19 points. Cortez Garland continued his breakout junior season with 18 points, with a perfect 8 of 8 mark from the foul line.
Junior Justin McAbee delivered key moments off the bench. McAbee played 22 minutes, scoring eight points, recording three steals and collecting two offensive rebounds.
"I thought we had some really, really good contributions, said May. "Juwan played like a senior, Justin came in and had incredible minutes offensively and defensively."
With 28 seconds remaining, McAbee stepped in front of a Clayton Dykhouse pass on the Hope baseline to get the ball back to the Brits. He was fouled on the play, splitting a pair of free throws and giving the Britons a 62-60 lead.
Hope knotted the score at 62 with seven seconds left in regulation. Albion called a timeout and set up a long pass from Perry to Ebeling. Ebeling's turnaround jumper hit back iron, forcing the game into overtime.
Another McAbee steal led to a Garland three to kick off overtime. On the next possession, McAbee found Ebeling for a layup and a 67-62 Albion lead. With 1:43 left in the first overtime, Albion had a slim 71-65 lead over the Flying Dutch. Following a Hope timeout, the visitors regrouped as Tyler George buried a 3-pointer.
With Albion up three, George was fouled with one second on the clock on a 3-point attempt. The Hope guard sank all three free throws, as Albion had 1.6 seconds to answer. An MJ Barnes jumper at the horn rattled out, sending the game into a second overtime.
A layup out of the gate by Hope left the Britons unfazed. At the other end, Perry nailed a clutch triple for a 78-77 Albion advantage. With 2:01 left, the Brits trailed by three. Ebeling was fouled to cut the deficit to one. Following a Hope miss, Garland came up big at the other end, knocking down a triple and giving the Brits a one point lead.
The Britons got a desperately needed stop at the other end. Hope elected to foul McAbee, who in turn sank both free throws to put Albion up by three with 34 seconds left. A Hope bucket was followed by a split pair of McAbee free throws. At the other end, the Albion defense came up big, forcing a miss and Ebeling securing the defensive rebound. The senior was fouled on the play and made both free throws to send Albion into Saturday's championship game.
On the offensive glass, the Britons worked to score 20 second chance points and keep possessions alive. No team ever built a double-digit lead.
On Saturday, the Britons will play Trine on the road for the MIAA Championship. Tip off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
