Softball splits in Alma

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ALMA, Mich. -- In a non conference twinbill, the Albion College softball team split a pair of games to Olivet College and Alma College on Friday. The Britons run-ruled Olivet, 15-7, before dropping a close 5-3 contest to the Scots.

GAME ONE: Albion 15 Olivet 7 (5 innings)

The Britons were clinging to the lead until they erupted for nine runs in the top of the fifth.

Sophomore Kenadie Baareman led off the game with a solo home run for a quick 1-0 lead. Albion padded its lead in the second thanks to a pair of unearned runs.

Olivet cut the lead to one run with a two-run single in the home half of the frame.

Senior Lauren Beougher immediately answered for the Britons, launching a solo shot in the third.

The Comets worked to tie the game in the bottom of the frame, both unearned runs off starter Melanie Cosens. Cosens went the distance allowing five earned runs in the game.

Senior Felicia Maximiux helped Albion regain the lead with an RBI single. She drove in Kacy Rossi who smacked a one-out single to right. Two batters later, Shanyn Jewell singled to plate Maximiuk, pushing Albion ahead 6-4.

In the fifth, Albion's monster inning helped secure the run-rule victory. Skyler Heman singled and Lilly Patillo and Mya Nummer both walked. Pinch hitter Jacqueline Jozefczyk reached on a fielder's choice, but a throwing error allowed Herman to score.

Maximiuk then doubled, driving in Nummer and Patilllo for a 9-4 lead. The Britons added nine runs off six hits total in the frame. Olivet's three runs in the bottom of the inning didn't hurt the Britons in the win.

GAME TWO: Alma 5 Albion 3

A late rally would come up short for the Britons, dropping the nightcap to the hosts. Grace Connolly put Albion on the board first with a solo home run in the second. Alma answered the next inning with a solo home run of their own, tying the game at one after three innings.

The Scots put up four runs in the fifth to build a 5-1 lead.

Looking for a rally in the bottom of the seventh, Rossi led off the inning with a single to right. Olivia Polak drew a walk, putting two aboard with two out for Beougher. The senior delivered a two run double to right, driving in the pair.

Connolly was intentionally walked and Herman drew a walk to load the bases. The Britons could not push across the tying run.

Sophomore Ashley Pion struck out 11 hitters in the game.

Albion moves to 10-10 overall. The Britons will be back in action Saturday at Kalamazoo where they will play the Hornets at 12 p.m. and then Hope at 2 p.m.
