Box Score HOLLAND, Mich. -- Able to hold off a late run, the Albion College men's lacrosse team avenged a loss from Mar. 23 in a 15-14 win over Hope College. The Britons improve to 10-1 overall with a perfect 4-0 mark in the conference, while Hope drops to 7-1, 1-1.
Two minutes into the game, Hope got on the board first. The teams battled in the first quarter before Eddie Symons scored the first Albion goal with 2:35 remaining in the period. Exactly one minute later, junior Gerald Haadsma pushed the Brits in front. Hope evened the game with seven seconds to play, as the teams were kotted after one.
Following a Hope goal to open the second, Albion closed out the half on a 6-1 run. Eric Fraeyman, Ethan Rottell and Haadsma all scored to give Albion a 5-3 lead with 10:25 before the half.
Goals 30 seconds apart by Haadsma and Jace Conley extended the Albion lead. After a Hope goal, the visitors immediately answered with a strike by Rottell, as the Britons held an 8-4 lead at the half.
Rottell -- the MIAA's leader in assists -- found Grant Chaffee for the first goal of the second half. A Flying Dutch goal was answered by another Conley goal, as the teams traded goals. Symons inflated the lead to 11-6 on a man-up goal off a feed from Rottell, and Brock Yabs's goal with 2:47 left in the third gave Albion the 12-6 lead. Hope closed out the period on a 4-0 run, as Albion held a four goal lead heading into the fourth.
With 11:48 on the clock, Hope would cut the lead to 12-11. Conley answered with back to back goals, putting the Britons back up by three. The Flying Dutch would keep getting within one, but would be unable to tie the game as Conley scored three of his five goals in the fourth quarter.
Haadsma ended the day with a hat trick and Rottell contributed a pair of goals and three assists. Senior goalie Josh Luketic (4-0) was spectacular between the pipes, making 21 saves and picking up 17 ground balls.
Despite being outshot and struggling at the face off X, the Britons gritted out the conference victory.
"That was an awesome game and a great team win," said head coach Jake DeCola. "It felt like there was an eight-armed monster out there running around in purple and gold. I am real proud of our seniors … that was a real good team and I am sure we will see them again."
Albion hosts Adrian on Tuesday night for a 7 p.m. game.
