Box Score 2 ALBION -- In non conference action on Thursday, the Albion College softball team swept Kalamazoo College, 7-2 and 6-4. The Britons held all momentum in game one before some late heroics came into play in game two.
GAME ONE: Albion 7 Kalamazoo 2
All seven Albion runs came in the first two innings, as the Brits scored four in the first and three in the second.
Olivia Palasek led off the game with a single down the left field line, and came around to score when Shanyn Jewell laced a triple to the wall in left center. Lauren Beougher reached on an error, and Grace Connolly singled through the 5-6 hole for a 3-0 lead.
Skyler Herman singled to right, and she and Connolly moved 60 feet on a wild pitch. Kacy Rossi looped a single to right center, plating Connolly and capping off the scoring for the first inning.
After the Britons batted around in the first, Palasek led off the bottom of the second by reaching on an error. Jewell followed with a single up the middle for her second hit of the game. With two outs, Herman singled through the left side to drive in Palasek and give Albion a 5-0 lead.
Sophomore Lilly Patillo slapped a single to right center, bringing in both Herman and Jewell -- two unearned runs -- for a 7-0 lead after two.
Kalamazoo tacked on one in the fourth and one in the seventh, but the run would be stopped by freshman Melanie Cosens.
Cosens (5-5) was solid in the circle, allowing six hits over seven innings of work. She allowed two runs, one earned, while striking out four.
The Britons got production from top to bottom in their lineup, as six different players recorded RBI.
GAME TWO: Albion 6 Kalamazoo 4
Three long balls provided much of the offense in game two, as the Britons got home runs from Jewell, Beougher and Connolly.
Just line game one, it didn't take long for Albion to get on the board first. Jewell singled through the left side and moved to third on a fielder's choice coupled with an error. After Beougher advanced to second, Connolly ripped a two-run single up the middle for a 2-0 lead after one.
In the second, Albion got a pair of runs with two outs. Palasek doubled to left center, and Jewell followed by smacking her first collegiate home run to left center. The shot game the Britons a 4-0 lead after two innings.
Kalamazoo clawed back, scoring an unearned run in the fifth.
The Hornets would then tack on three in the sixth to tie the game at four. Kalamazoo scored three runs off five hits in the inning, eventually stranding two. But, the damage was done as the Britons headed into the bottom of the inning looking to retake the lead.
With the help of their seniors, the Britons did just that. With two outs, Beougher drilled a no-doubt solo shot to left center for the senior's fourth blast of the season. It gave Albion a 5-4 lead. It didn't take long for Connolly to provide the Brits with some insurance, as she followed with a solo home run of her own, making it a 6-4 game.
Morgan Deckrow (1-1) retired the Hornets in order to seal the win for Albion.
Cosens went five-plus innings, allowing four runs on seven hits. Deckrow pitched the final two innings, allowing just two hits while striking out one.
Connolly had three RBI in the game while Jewell added two.
Albion is now 14-12 on the year, and the 14 wins is the most since the 2009 season.
The Britons are tentatively scheduled to travel to Alma on Saturday for a conference doubleheader. With the weather, the schedule may shift, and as always, we will keep you posted at gobrits.com.
