Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Perfection.
With a 12-10 win over Calvin University, the Albion College men's lacrosse team concluded the MIAA slate with a perfect 6-0 record. Albion wraps up the regular season with a 12-1 overall record, and are likely to secure the No. 1 spot for next week's conference tournament.
The Britons were boosted by Sam Puzevic's seven goals. Defensively, Caleb Kropp and Bear Nelson caused four turnovers each.
It took just 71 seconds for the Britons to get on the board first. Brock Yabs found Puzevic for the sophomore's first goal of the game. Calvin tied the game midway through the first, but another late Puzevic strike -- this one off a feed from Ethan Rottell -- gave Albion a 2-1 advantage after one.
Calvin took a 3-2 lead before the Brits answered with three goals in a five minute span to regain the lead. Eric Fraeyman found Gerald Haadsma to tie the game with 4:57 left in the half. After another Puzevic goal, Nathan Vesper scored with one second on the clock, giving Albion a 5-3 halftime edge.
The Knights knotted things up at five before another Puzevic goal briefly pushed the visitors back in front. The teams traded goals to close out the third quarter, with the scored locked at seven heading into the fourth.
Goals by Puzevic and Jace Conley gave Albion the lead -- this time for good. Brock Yabs, Chad Burton and another Puzevic goal all capped the fourth quarter scoring.
Conley and Eddie Symons each finished with two assists. Haadsma and Josh Luketic each totaled seven ground balls. In goal, Luketic (6-0) made 12 saves for the Brits.
At the conclusion of the regular season, Conley and Puzevic finish 1-2 in the conference in goals (71, 65) while Rottell and Conley are 1-2 for assists (39, 29). Conley's 100 points not only leads the MIAA, but shatters the Albion single-season points record.
Likely the lock at No. 1, the Britons will learn their seeding future in the coming days. Details on the MIAA Tournament will be announced as soon as they are available.
