WLAX edged out in MIAA Semifinals

Box Score

NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- This one hurts.

In a hard-fought battle, the Albion College women's lacrosse team was narrowly edged out by St. Mary's College, 15-14, on Wednesday evening. The No. 4 seeded Brits went toe to toe with the No. 1 seeded Belles, but the MIAA Regular Season Champions prevailed in the MIAA Tournament Semifinals.

After a free position goal from Chrystelle Lopez put the Britons up 1-0, the Belles rattled off six consecutive goals for a 6-1 edge with 7:17 to play in the first half.

A goal by Carly Schwarz with 7:06 before the break sparked life into the Brits, as Albion closed out the final seven minutes of the half on a 6-1 run. Following Schwarz's goal, the Britons got goals from Destiny Okon and Lopez, cutting the deficit to two goals.

Another St. Mary's goal was answered by Okon. With 1:08 before the half, Okon connected for her third goal of the half to bring the visitors within one. Sophomore Addie Pastor evened the score with 34 seconds left in the half, as the two teams headed into the break tied at seven.

The Britons opened up the new period with goals by Schwarz and Okon for a 9-7 advantage. The teams would continue trading goals until the 9:26 mark.

With just under 10 minutes on the clock, the momentum began to swing back in the Belles' favor. The hosts scored four straight, turning a 13-12 deficit into a 15-13 lead with four minutes to play.

Lopez scored on a free position attempt late, but Albion was unable to find the equalizer down the stretch.

Lopez finished with five goals and three assists. Okon added four goals while Schwarz scored a hat trick and dished out an assist.

The Britons turned the ball over 24 times in the loss and went just 12 of 22 on the clear.

Alexis Robinson had another solid performance in goal, making 10 saves for Albion.

The loss potentially ended the careers of Schwarz, Natalia Catanzarite, Paige Dredge, Kierstin Rose, Ashley Iglesias and Abby Sheklow as the six seniors on the roster.
