MLAX stays hot, wins MIAA opener

Box Score

ALBION, Mich. -- In their conference opener, the Albion College men's lacrosse team won with ease, defeating Trine University, 19-5. The Britons improve to 7-1 overall, 1-0 in the MIAA.

Prior to the game, the Britons held a Senior Spotlight day for two of its seniors -- Bo Taylor and Josh Luketic.

The MIAA scoring leader, Jace Conley, continued his tear with seven goals and three assists. He now has 46 goals on the season and 66 points. With 153 career points he moves into fourth all-time in Albion history.

Sophomore Sam Puzevic scored five goals, while freshman Ethan Rottell scored once and added four assists to his MIAA leading-assist tally.

Defensively, junior Joey Tatar caused seven turnovers.

Out of the gates, Albion jumped to an impressive 9-0 lead after one quarter. Tatar, Rottell, Conley (4), Puzevic (2) and Gerald Haadsma all scored within the first 15 minutes. Sharing the ball well, seven of the first nine Albion goals were assisted.

A goal by Eric Fraeyman to open the second pushed the Albion lead to 10-0. Trine scored twice in the period, but the hosts held a commanding 11-2 advantage at the half.

The Britons outscored the Thunder 5-0 in the third quarter to extend their lead. Led by two goals from Brock Yabs and Puzevic in the quarter, Abion took a 16-2 lead into the fourth quarter.

Three Trine goals in the final period would not matter, as the Brits built a large lead early on.

Luketic (1-0) earned the win in goal, making nine saves for the Brits.

Chad Burton picked up four ground balls and caused three turnovers. Albin was near-perfect on the clear, going 17 of 19. Trine committed 31 turnovers compared to Albion's 16.

"It was great to see our seniors do an awesome job tonight, since it is a global pandemic and you never know the situation it was pretty awesome to be able to honor two of our seniors today in a spotlight situation. They both played awesome, and it was great to see all the guys fired up for our first league game. Overall, it thought we played pretty well," said head coach Jake DeCola.

The Brits will host Alma College on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. game.
