Box Score ALBION, Mich. -- Backed by a career-high nine goals from Sam Puzevic, the Albion College men's lacrosse team cruised to a 27-10 win over Alma College on Tuesday evening. Winners of four straight, the Britons improve to 8-1 overall, 2-0 in the MIAA.
Puzevic also dished out an assist and caused two turnovers. Jace Conley, who now currently leads the NCAA in goals with 52, scored six goals and added one assist. Another NCAA leader, Joey Tatar, increased his lead in caused turnovers. The junior now has 40 on the season following four against Alma.
Albion cruised to a 10-1 lead after one quarter. Four Puzevic goals in the quarter were accompanied by two each from Conley and Eric Fraeyman. Brock Yabs added to his stellar freshman campaign with a goal in the first quarter, and Tatar scored his third of the season in the period.
The Britons outscored Alma, 7-0, in the second quarter. A man up goal from Yabs ignited the scoring in the second period. Puzevic scored three times in the quarter, as well as two more by Conley. Eddie Symons scored in the second as well, giving the hosts a commanding 17-1 lead at halftime.
Led by a pair of goals from Gerald Haadsma, the Britons kept extending their lead through the next quarter. The junior also picked up a team-high seven ground balls. Heading into the final period, Albion held a 25-4 advantage.
Jacob Castles contributed two goals, and Bear Nelson highlighted the fourth quarter with his first collegiate goal.
With three assists in the game, freshman Ethan Rottell leads the MIAA in assists and is tied for the NCAA lead in assists.
The Britons went 21 of 24 on the clear, while Alma struggled with a 6 of 18 mark.
Playing three quarters, Josh Luketic (2-0) made 13 saves in the win.
Albion forced the visitors to commit 29 turnovers.
"That was a really good team win and we had to play extra hard today because we wanted to do things in a good way," said head coach Jake DeCola. "They always say 'it is hard to beat anyone three times in a row', so today we had to do things pretty well in order to pull out the win."
The Britons will have over a week off before they travel to their next opponent. On Apr. 15, Albion will travel to Kalamazoo for a 7 p.m. start.
