Box Score 2 ALBION -- These record books are going to need some serious redoing.
With two records falling on Saturday, the Albion College softball team swept St. Mary's College, 9-3 and 5-0. The Britons close out the regular season with a 17-5 overall record, the most wins since 2011.
Grace Connolly and Ashley Pion solidified their places in history. On a 2-run double in the fifth inning of game one, Connolly became Albion's all-time RBI leader with 87 career RBI. The record the senior broke is one that's been standing since 1993.
With a punchout to end game two, Pion set a new single season strikeout record. Now with 123 strikeouts, the sophomore breaks an 18-year old record. The 123 K's also puts her tops in the conference to conclude the regular season.
GAME ONE: Albion 9 St. Mary's 3
After the Belles put up two runs in the top of the first, Albion immediately responded with a three-run inning.
Kenadie Baareman hit a single through the 5-6 hole and stole second. With one out, Lauren Beougher doubled to the wall in left, bringing in Baareman and cutting the deficit in half. Sophomore Shanyn Jewell crushed a double down the left field line -- one that landed on the chalk -- driving in two and putting the Britons up 3-2.
The bats went cold, as both teams were held scoreless until the fifth, when Albion used a six-run inning to break the game open.
A head first dive helped Olivia Palasek beat out an infield single, and she moved to second when Baareman bunted for a hit. Beougher smoked a ground ball up the middle to drive in Palasek, and both runners advanced on the throw to put a pair in scoring position for Connolly.
The moment was set up perfectly for the senior, crushing a double to right center and becoming Albion's career RBI leader with one swing of the bat. Senior Skyler Herman followed with a single to right, putting runners at the corners with no out.
Herman stole second, and the throw down allowed Connolly to cross, building the lead to 7-2. Sophomore Lilly Patillo laced a single to drive in Herman and extend the advantage. With the bases loaded. Palasek was plunked to cap off the scoring for the Brits.
St. Mary's added a run in the seventh, but could add no more as the Britons locked up the win.
Pion (10-9) threw seven innings, allowing just one earned run and struck out six.
GAME TWO: Albion 5 St. Mary's 0
Batting as the visitors, Albion scored its first run of the nightcap in the second. Connolly worked a leadoff walk and moved to second on a Patillo single. The pair advanced 60 feet on a wild pitch before Kacy Rossi lifted a sac fly to center, driving in Connolly and putting the Brits ahead, 1-0.
Rossi -- who finished game two a perfect 2 for 2 -- singled to lead off the fifth and was lifted for pinch runner Olivia Polak. A beautiful sasc bunt by Mya Nummer allowed Polak to get into scoring position for Palasek. The sophomore delivered with a RBI single to left to add to Albion's lead.
In the sixth, Beougher led off the inning with a walk and was followed by a single from Connolly, putting runners at the corners. Beougher scored on a wild pitch, putting the Brits ahead, 3-0. Two batters later, Patillo drove in Connolly to tack on an insurance run for Albion. Felicia Maximiuk came in to pinch run for Patillo, and later scored when Rossi legged out an infield single.
Pion (11-9) went the distance again in game two, striking out seven in the game. Through 14 innings, Pion walked just one hitter.
