Box Score ALBION -- Eight surely is great.
With a 14-6 win over Trine University, the Albion College men's lacrosse team advances to their eighth consecutive MIAA Championship game. A balanced attack and stellar defense vaulted the Britons into the Championship game on Friday night.
Albion got off to a hot start, leading 4-0 after one. Freshman Brock Yabs ignited the scoring with a goal early on, and was followed by a beautiful goal from Jace Conley -- the MIAA's leading scorer. Midway through the first, Eddie Symons found Sam Puzevic to build the lead to 3-0 Albion's final goal of the period came from freshman Ethan Rottell, assisted by Conley.
Early in the second quarter, Albion added another goal, courtesy of Timmy Salinas. With 3:34 before the half, Trine scored their first goal of the evening.
A minute later, Yabs found Puzevic to push Albion's lead back to five. After a man-up goal by the Thunder, captain Gerald Haadsma scored with 27 seconds remaining in the period, giving the hosts a 7-2 edge at the break.
Out of the half, the Britons scored first when Rottell found Conley. Trine went on a 3-0 run in a 66 second span, cutting Albion's lead to three goals with 10 minutes to play in the third quarter. Haadsma stepped up and killed the momentum with a goal, building the lead back to 9-5. Puzevic closed out the quarter with a late goal, extending the lead to 10-5 heading into the final quarter.
The Britons scored four straight to open the fourth to build a commanding lead. Two goals from Conley and one each by Puzevic and Rottell secured Albion a spot in the championship game.
Conley led all scorers with a six point evening (4g, 2a) while Rottell contributed five (2g, 3a). Puzevic struck for five goals in the win.
Senior Josh Luketic (6-0) made 13 saves for the Brits.
Albion was 20 of 23 on the clear.
The Britons advance to face Hope College in the MIAA Championship game on Friday night. Albion will host the Flying Dutch for a 7 p.m. face off. Hope handed Albion its only loss of the season back on Mar. 23 (23-18) in non conference play. The Brits rallied to defeat Hope on the road, 15-14, in MIAA action on Apr. 17.
