Volleyball streaks by John Carroll

The Britons defeated the Blue Streaks in straight sets on Saturday morning

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- On Saturday morning, the Albion College volleyball team capped off a perfect weekend in Ohio by taking down John Carroll University in straight sets. With the win, the Brits improve to 3-1 on the young season.

After a sluggish start offensively, the Britons amped up the offense by the third set, swinging at a .303 clip. In that set, the Brits committed just four attack errors.

Sophomore Kaylynne Nicholson led the way with 12 kills, hitting at an efficient .323 mark. Classmate Olivia Alexander added 11 kills for the Brits.

Senior libero Kameron Haley finished with a game-high 17 digs while Ava Smith totaled 10. Freshman Alyssa Olley was impressive defensively, racking up a career-high nine digs.

Mariah Brenz controlled the Albion offense, dishing out 31 assists and contributing five kills.

The Blue Streaks opened the match on a 4-0 run before the Brits stormed back to flip the script, taking a 10-5 lead. Trailing 22-21 late in the first, junior Jesse Hepner's kill gave the ball back to Albion and knotting the set at 22. A JCU attack error was followed by a service ace off the hand of Alexander, putting the Brits one point from taking the set. Hepner gave Albion a 25-22 win with a kill, totaling eight for the match.

Another early deficit was no match for the Brits in set two, as a 16-15 deficit turned into a 20-17 lead. Two kills by Alexander and one by Schienke helped the Brits in the late run. Albion took the set by a 25-20 margin off a John Carroll attack error.

Albion held all of the momentum in the final set, as an early lead would prove to be enough for the Brits. An unlikely kill from Haley sealed the win and the sweep.

After an impressive weekend, the Brits will return to their home court for their 2021 home opener. On Wednesday, Albion will host Manchester for a 6:30 p.m. match.
