Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

No. 19 volleyball rallies to split at Heidelberg

TIFFIN, Ohio – After a hard-fought loss, the No. 19 Albion College volleyball team rallied back to defeat a tough Heidelberg team. The Britons fell to No. 20 Otterbein before an insane five-set win over the Student Princes.

GAME ONE: No. 20 Otterbein 3 No. 19 Albion 1

In a Top 25 matchup, the Britons could not come away with the win, as the Cardinals had a strong attack all day. For the match, the Britons swung at a .323 clip – but Otterbein was .439.

Chloe Webber led Albion with 17 kills. Olivia Alexander had a complete game with 11 kills, 13 digs and a block.

Mariah Brenz had 34 assists for the Brits. Three Albion players finished with double-digit digs – Courtney Companion, 14, Alexander, 13 and Jenna Schienke (10).

GAME TWO: No. 19 Albion 3 Heidelberg 2

It was a fight to the finish and a battle to remember, as the Student Princes were a tough opponent. Albion won the first set before Heidelberg evened the match.

Albion trailed 24-21 in the third before the Brits scored five straight to win the match. In that run, Kaylynne Nicholson and Webber had two kills apiece. Heidelberg gritted out a 26-24 win in the fourth to force the decisive fifth set.

In the fifth, the Britons jumped out to a 5-2 lead before the Berg took a 6-5 win. Another Albion lead was erased by the Student Princes, setting up a dramatic finish. The two teams traded points down the stretch, and with the score knotted at 15, it was Albion with the upperhand.

Jesse Hepner slammed a kill to put Albion a point away from victory. A Heidelberg attack error sent the Britons home victorious after one of the most back and forth matches they played this season.

A number of Brits totaled double digits in digs – Brenz and Companion (18), Alexander (17), Schienke (16) and Madison McGraw (11).

Webber led all players with 23 kills, as Alexander added 15. Heper tallied 13 for the Brits.

Brenz dished out 56 assists, fourth-most in a five set game in Albion history. Webber also finished with six blocks, as Brenz and Hepner contributed five.

Albion is now 19-3 overall and is one win shy of tying a program-best in wins for a season.

The Britons will play their final regular season game at home on Tuesday. Albion hosts Kalamazoo for a 6:30 p.m. match.
