Swimming competes at MIAA Relays

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Albion College men's and women's swimming teams competed at the MIAA Relays on Friday night. It was the first true look at how the Britons fare against conference teams. Below is a summary of the evening.

A talented young team of Lauren Bailey, Mattie Smith, Sage Gettings and Hannah Fathman placed second in the 200 yard medley relay, swimming a 1:50.75. For the men, the team of Brendan Ritchie, Declan Tharp, Nate Cobb and Billy Barr finished third with a time of 1:37.15.

In the 200 yard backstroke relay, Ritchie, Canon Rose, Evan Steele and Richard Pifer swam a 1:45.15, good for sixth overall.

With a time of 2:19.40, the quartet of Bryn Cavanaugh, Alexis Glaser, Emily Evers and Gray Willing took fourth in the 200 breaststroke relay. On the men's side, Albion finished sixth, coming in at 1:58.69. The team was composed of Owen Schaaf, Andrew Woods, Jalen Hung and Brennen Curry – two sophomores and two freshmen.

In the 500 progressive relay, the women placed eighth (5:28.25). Swimming in the race for the Brits was Mikala Muccino, Laurel Campbell, Alyvia Martinez and Olivia Perifili. The men's team of Barr, Tharp, AJ Zako, Cobb was fourth with a time of 4:20.55.

In a tight 200 fly race, the women were narrowly edged out, placing third. The team of Getting, Smith, Bailey and Fathman swam a 1:47.39. The B team for the women ended up in seventh, as Muccino, Martinez, Emma Frame and Glaser swam a 2:01.21.

Tharp, Cobb, Zako and Barr finished fourth in the men's 200 fly, clocking in at 1:35.88.

A 3x500 yard freestyle relay was held, where the women took seventh. Perifili, Cavanaugh and Frame swam a 18:04.14. For the men, Pifer, Zako and Kelvin Crone-Willis took home sixth place (15:43.35).

In the men's 100 yard backstroke relay, Pifer, Rose, Steele and Ritchie took fourth (46.97).

With just one upperclassman on the squad, the women's 100 breaststroke relay team finished fourth. A time of 1:02.48 was finished by Glaser, Evers, Willig and Cavanaugh. In the men's race, Albion placed sixth (53.31), thanks to Curry, Woods, Schaaf and Hung.

Gettings, Smith, Fathman and Bailey recorded a second place finish in the 100 fly relay (48.37). They broke the previous meet record with that swim, but were narrowly outtouched by Calvin. Cobb, Nick Johns, Tharp and Zako were third in the men's race with a time of 42.99.

The 100 yard free relay team of Martinez, Muccino, Katie Flynn and Cavanaugh took sixth (50.52).

Smith, Bailey, Evers and Glaser competed in the 400 medley IM relay, where they ended in fifth (4:27.94). A time of 3:53.28 was good for fourth on the men's side (Tharp, Zako, Woods, Cobb). Albion's B team was just behind them, swimming a 3:56.67 (Curry, Hung, Crone-Willis, Schaaf).

The night ended with a 200 yard IM relay. The women placed third with a time of 1:40.66 (Fathman, Cavanaugh, Smith, Gettings). Ritchie, Pifer, Johns and Barr swam the men's race, placing fifth (1:28.41)

On Friday, the women's team will host Hillsdale for a dual. The men will travel to Wabash next Saturday, Oct. 29.
