No. 24 volleyball advances to MIAA Semifinals

ALBION – Backed by a sparkling performance from Chloe Webber, the No. 24 Albion College volleyball team defeated Kalamazoo College in straight sets on Tuesday in the first round of the MIAA Tournament. Webber hit a .619 good for a game-high 14 kills. 

Albion improves to 24-5 overall and advances to face the No. 2 seed Hope College on Friday night.

Kalamazoo battled in the opening set, but Albion – backed by a boisterous Kresge crowd – prevailed to a 25-19 win. Holding on to a 19-18 lead, Albion went on a 5-0 to put them within a point of set point. A Webber kill gave the hosts the win in the opening set of the playoff contest. 

The Britons dominated a 25-16 win in the middle set, scoring the final four points. Two kills by senior middle Jesse Hepner highlighted the run, as Ja'Nyece Larry's kill sealed the win and put the Brits up 2-0.

In the final set, the Britons climbed to a seven point lead to take a 15-8 advantage. Another kill from Larry sent Albion to the next round with a 25-17 win. 

Courtney Companion had 15 digs in the win, as Mariah Brenz tallied 10. Brenz also dished out 36 assists. Hepner led all players with four total blocks. 

On Friday, Albion has a well-awaited rematch with Hope College in the MIAA Semifinals. All matches will be hosted by Calvin. Game time is 4:30 p.m.
