Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Tough opener for women's basketball

WILMINGTON, Ohio – Too many costly turnovers at critical times haunted the Albion College women's basketball team, as an early lead slipped away in a 65-63 loss to Ohio Wesleyan University. As a team, the Britons committed 24 turnovers and were outscored 18-7 in the final period.

In the season opener, three Brits finished in double figures. Lolo Reed led Albion with 14 points, while Elena Welker chipped in with 13. Junior Daniah Beavers collected a double-double, scoring 12 points and bringing down 11 rebounds.

Off to a fast start, Albion led 19-13 at the end of the first quarter. Layups to end the period from Welker and Reed helped Albion establish its guard game early on. Adding the size of Beavers to the mix, the Brits took a 42-30 lead into halftime.

OWU slowly chipped away at the Albion lead, forcing the Britons into turnovers. Despite scoring 15 points off Albion turnovers, the Battling Bishops were able to halt the offensive rhythm of the Brits, who struggled in their half court offense during the second half.

With a nine point lead heading into the final period, Albion made just two field goals in the final quarter, while OWU kept attacking the Brits. Forcing an Albion turnover late, the Battling Bishops sank the go-ahead layup with 12 seconds to play. The Britons had another chance at the buzzer, but another turnovers ended their chances of a win or tie.

The Britons made just nine of 18 free throws in the loss.

Albion will play at 1 p.m. on Saturday against the loser of the Grove City-Wilmington contest.
