Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Complete team effort lifts WBB in Ohio

WILMINGTON, Ohio – Getting contributions up and down the lineup, the Albion College women's basketball team picked up their first win of the season, defeating Grove City College, 71-66. Junior Daniah Beavers led Albion with 13 points and nine rebounds. Riley Davis tacked on 11 points and four blocks.

Albion built a slim lead in the first quarter, but Grove City worked its way back. By the end of the period, the Brits had just a 21-19 advantage. The second quarter panned out similar to the first, as the Britons inflated their lead to as many as seven points, but would retain the two point lead at the half.

With 1:39 led in the third quarter, Grove City held a 52-50 lead. Senior guard Angelina Mendieta buried a three off a pass from Lolo Reed, pushing the Brits back in front. The Wolverines scored a late bucket in the quarter, holding a one point leading going into the fourth.

It was back and forth throughout the final period before a basket by Audrey DeWaters put the Brits ahead for good with 5:58 on the clock. Off a Grove City miss, the Britons answered at the other end with a Davis layup. Reed knocked down a jumper with 3:52 to play to put Albion in control, 66-60.

Elena Welker had a complete game, scoring eight points, grabbing nine rebounds and dishing out seven assists. DeWaters and Becca Ross combined to score 17 points off the bench for the Britons.

Led by Beavers and DeWaters, Albion scored 20 second chance points.

Following the conclusion of the tournament, Welker received All-Tournament team honors.

The Britons will head to Oberlin College on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. tip.
