Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Welker, Reed combine for 43 in road win

OBERLIN, Ohio – The dangerous backcourt tandem of Elena Welker and Lolo Reed strikes again.

On Wednesday, the duo combined for 43 points in the Albion College women's basketball team's 73-61 win over Oberlin College. 19 of Reed's 21 points came in the second half.

Throughout a tight contest, it was Becca Ross who provided the dagger. The senior buried a corner three with 2:15 on the clock, extending Albion's lead to eight points. She finished with 12 points off the bench.

It was a slow and sloppy first quarter, as the Brits turned the ball over and could not get in rhythm on either end of the floor. Through 10 minutes, Albion trailed 15-9.

Albion worked to eventually take the lead into halftime. With the score knotted at 23, a jumper from Audrey DeWaters pushed the Brits ahead. Two possessions later, Welker knocked down a 3-pointer in transition to inflate the lead to five points. A late three by the hosts cut into the lead, but the Britons led 30-28 at halftime.

Unable to pull ahead in the third quarter, the Brits battled possession for possession with Oberlin. With 10 minutes to go, the teams were deadlocked at 46.

With 4:57 remaining and Albion down by one, the visitors broke through for an 11-0 run and gained their biggest lead of the night. Daniah Beavers ignited the run by getting to the line and sinking a pair of free throws. After a lull in the scoring, a putback from Reed and two Ross free throws vaulted Albion up by five.

A stop at the other end led to Ross's clutch three to put the game nearly out of reach. Reed would go on to ice the game with free throws a minute later.

Welker led all scorers with 22 points. The senior added three blocks, three rebounds and a pair of steals to her stat line.

Beavers racked up a career-high 15 rebounds – five on the offensive glass.

Albion had 17 offensive rebounds, highlighted by six from Reed. The visitors had 15 second chance points compared to Oberlin's eight.

The Brits improve to 2-1 on the young season.

Albion hits their home court on Saturday when they play John Carroll in the home opener. The second half of a men's-women's doubleheader is scheduled for 4 p.m.
