Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Ice Cole-d! Fifth year leads WBB to rout of John Carroll

ALBION – Despite limited minutes in the first half due to foul trouble, Cierra Cole's 13 point second half played a key part in the Albion College women's basketball team's 89-56 victory over John Carroll. The fifth year senior drained three consecutive 3-pointers in the third quarter, putting the Britons heavily in control.

Daniah Beavers led Albion with 14 points and nine rebounds, going six for seven from the floor. Senior guard Elena Welker collected her first career double-double, scoring 10 points and bringing down 11 boards. She added a game-high seven assists in the win.

After 20 minutes, it looked like it was going to be an exciting back and forth contest. A high-scoring opening quarter saw the hosts leading 25-17 early on. Albion began inflating its lead in the second quarter – aided by big minutes off the bench from Becca Ross and DeBraya Edwards. Ross scored 11 points, as Edwards had a solid stat line of 12 points, seven boards and three steals.

With 4:06 before the half, the Brits held a 10 points lead. John Carroll went on a run to close out the period, getting stops and capitalizing on Albion turnovers. After closing the gap to as little as two points, the Britons regained momentum before halftime. As time expired, Welker found Edwards in the corner, who buried a triple to push the hosts ahead 48-41.

Holding on to a nine point lead, Cole swished her first three with 6:58 to go in the third. After JCU answered with a trey of their own, on the ensuing possession it was Cole again to nail the shot from deep. She capped it off on Albion's next trip down the floor with a long three from beyond the arc to help Albion lead 61-48.

Cole's final three ignited a 15-2 run that Albion closed out the third quarter on, to be in total control for the final 10 minutes.

Lolo Reed also finished in double figures, scoring 10 points.

Led by Ross and Edwards, the Briton bench outscored JCU's. 37-14.

Albion shot 50.7 percent from the field – 45 percent from beyond the arc. John Carroll finished the evening with a 31 percent margin from the floor, and 14 percent from three.

The Britons will head to Franklin College on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. tipoff.
