Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's hoops doubles up Belles in MIAA opener

Albion used 62 points in the paint to rout St. Mary's

ALBION – Starting off conference with a bang.

In their MIAA opener, the Albion College women's basketball team doubled up St. Mary's College, 88-44, in a rout of the Belles. Seven players scored nine or more points as the Brits won their fifth straight.

NOTABLES

Junior Riley Davis led the way with 12 points and a career-best four blocks. Lolo Reed tacked on 12 points as well, as the pair paved the way for the Albion offense.

Off the bench, Audrey DeWaters tied her career highs in points (9) and rebounds (8), four coming on the offensive glass. Elena Welker and Daniah Beavers added nine points each for the Brits, with Beavers hauling in a game-high 12 rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED

From the start, Albion dominated the tempo and rhythm of the contest. As time expired in the opening quarter, a bucket by Ava Guilford sent the momentum back to the Brits. After the first period, Albion led 24-15.

In the second, the hosts took control of the game, building the lead to as many as 17 points. Despite no run longer than a 6-0 span, Albion capitalized on St. Mary's miscues and took advantage of second chance opportunities. In the first half, the Brits scored seven points off turnovers and nine from second chances.

With a 17 point lead heading into the second half, Albion kept its foot on the gas and continued to add to the lead. Senior guards Becca Ross and Angelina Mendieta provided significant minutes off the bench, combining for 14 points and six rebounds.

DeBraya Edwards chipped in with eight points, as Cierra Cole and Welker each dished out five assists.

EVERYTHING BUT THE SCORE

With 20 offensive rebounds, Albion improves its season average to 18.8 offensive boards per game. That margin leads the league, over six rebounds better than the next opponent.

Steadily backed by Davis and Beavers on the blocks, the Britons also lead the MIAA in blocks per game (6.2).

Albion's bench put up 40 points alone – including 21 in the fourth quarter.

Using size to their advantage, the Brits scored 62 points in the paint.

Albion wins their conference opener for the seventh consecutive season. The Britons are now 5-1 overall and 1-0 in the MIAA. St. Mary's falls to 3-4, 0-1 in conference action.

UP NEXT

The Brits will continue MIAA action on Saturday when they travel to Olivet. Game time against the Comets is scheduled for 7 p.m.
