MLAX throttles Hanover in season opener

ALBION – On Opening Day, the Albion College men's lacrosse team put on a show, throttling Hanover College, 22-1 on Saturday afternoon. Despite cold temperatures outside, the offense lit up the scoreboard for 22 goals while cranking out 70 shots.

Jace Conley rewrote the record books in conjunction with his already storied career. The senior eclipsed the 200 career point mark early in the first quarter. Later in the half, Conley became Albion's all-time leader in goals scored, passing the previous mark of 149 set by Cameron Braun.

Conley finished the afternoon with a game-high 10 points. Sophomore Ethan Rottell picked up where he left off last season, scoring a pair of goals and dishing out four assists. Sam Puzevic tacked on three goals along with an assist for the Brits.

It didn't take long for the Brits to get on the board, as Conley scored less than three minutes into the game off a pass from Rottell. Puzevic found the back of the net twice in the first quarter as Albion ended the first up 5-0.

The Britons rattled off nine goals in the second to take a commanding 14-0 lead into halftime. Brock Yabs, Rottell, Gabe Rothman, Seth Repkey and Conley all tacked on goals within the first five minutes to build a big lead.

With 3:21 before the break, freshman Robbie Dameron recorded his first collegiate point with an unassisted goal. To end the period, Rothman found Andrew Miller for a goal, giving the Britons a dominant 14-0 lead at the break.

Yabs, Conleyn and Repkey all scored in the third, along with a goal from freshman Fabrizio Raciti. Hanover's lone goal came late in the third period.

In the fourth, Albion got goals from Dameron, Grant Chaffee, Vaughn Shewell and Ryan Meldrum

Sophomore goalie Bradley Luketic (1-0) made one save in 30 minutes of work. Jack Gogonis was the second half goalie, making seven saves for the Brits.

Senior Bear Nelson continued to be a terror on defense, causing three turnovers in the contest.

Captain Gerald Haadsma scooped up 10 ground balls while going 15 of 19 from the faceoff X.

The win was the largest margin of victory since a 33-3 win against Olivet back in 2018. With 22 goals, the Britons recorded the most in a game since last season's 25-7 win at Kalamazoo.
