Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Showtime? Lo-time. WBB battles for comeback win

ALBION – For 31 minutes and 28 seconds, things looked bleak for the Albion College women's basketball team.

But a dominant fourth quarter spearheaded by Lolo Reed vaulted the Britons to a 56-43 win over Alma College. Outscoring the Scots 23-5 in the final period, Reed scored eight of the first 10 points of the quarter – including the go-ahead bucket.

In limited minutes due to foul trouble, Reed still managed to score a team-high 15 points while grabbing six rebounds. Sophomore Dareonna Little turned in a double-double, dropping 13 points while bringing down a dozen rebounds.

On her senior night, Cierra Cole scored seven points, including a big and-one in the fourth. Junior Elena Welker had a solid performance, scoring seven points, grabbing eight rebounds and dishing out four assists.

Trailing 8-2 early on, the Brits finished the first quarter on a 6-0 run. Four points from Cole and a bucket by Little knotted the game at eight at the end of one.

A trey from freshman Cierra Calloway gave Albion a 19-13 lead with over three minutes before the half. Alma had other ideas, going on a 9-0 run to end the period and take a lead into halftime. The Scots led 22-19 with all of the momentum at the half.

Alma built the lead to as many as seven points in the third, threatening to spoil senior night. Welker nailed three free throws and Reed reentered, scoring to cut the deficit to one. The Scots answered right back holding a five point lead after three.

Over the first three minutes of the fourth quarter, Reed went on a tear, scoring eight points, bringing down a rebound and swiping a steal. The run by Reed, coupled with a Welker jumper saw the Brits leading 43-39.

With 6:49 to play, Cole put the exclamation point on her senior night, throwing a ball high off the glass as she was fouled, getting the shot to drop for a three-point play. Cole drained the free throw, giving Albion a seven point cushion.

Junior Romee Natschke knocked down a triple with 4:43 on the clock to push the lead to 10 and swing the momentum completely in favor of the Brits. From that point on, Albion would lead by no less than eight points.

Albion scored 40 points in the paint compared to Alma's 16.

A battle for third place looms as the Brits wrap up regular season action on Saturday. Albion will travel to Calvin for a 3 p.m. tipoff.
