Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

No. 22 VB battles their way back, stays perfect

Albion erased a nine point deficit in the fourth set of their second match.

ALBION – Scoring the final eight points in a come-from-behind victory, the No. 22 Albion College volleyball team swept on day two of the Albion/Olivet Tournament, improving to 12-0 and bringing a ton of momentum into conference play next week.

The Britons made quick work of Illinois College before an incredible battle swatted away the Yellow Jackets of Baldwin Wallace, 3-1.

Albion chipped away and scored the final eight points to extinguish any chance of a game five between them and BW – the highlight of the afternoon.

GAME ONE: Albion 3 Illinois College 0

In the opener of the day, the Brits made quick work of a slumping IC squad. Chloe Webber racked up 13 kills as Olivia Alexander tallied 10. Jenna Schienke (13) and Courtney Companion (12) were the two Brits with double digit digs, while Mariah Brenz recorded 34 assists.

The Lady Blues swung at a .118 clip compared to Albion's .304 – including a remarkable .405 mark in the third set.

Albion defeated IC by margins of 25-17, 25-19, 25-14.

GAME TWO: Albion 3 Baldwin Wallace 1

Down 13-4 in the fourth set, the Britons worked to erase the deficit, beginning with five straight points – two coming via aces by Brenz. Unable to tie or take the lead, Baldwin Wallace held an 18-13 advantage, making things look bleak for the hosts. Three straight Albion points brought the Brits to within one, but the Yellow Jackets answered with three of their own points for a 21-17 lead.

A Yellow Jacket service error gave the ball back to the Brits. Two Alexander kills coupled with a BW double knotted the game at 21. With a poised Madison McGraw still back to serve, the Yellow Jackets committed an attack error before Brenz smacked a kill to the ground.

Fittingly enough, a solo block by Webber was followed by a kill from the fifth year to finish off the day and allow the Britons to storm their side of the court.

Webber finished with 14 kills as Brenz totaled 34 assists. Schienke led the defense with 15 digs, while sophomores McGraw (11) and Alyssa Olley (7) continued to be key contributors to the back row.

The schedule gets no easier for Albion, as they kick off conference play with No. 9 Hope College on Tuesday. First serve in Holland is slated for 6:30 p.m.
