VB comes up short in Top 25 clash

HOLLAND, Mich. — In a back and forth nail biter, the No. 18 Albion College volleyball team fell in five sets to No. 17 Hope College.

Hope took them first set by a 25-22 margin, but Albion had an answer ready in the next set. Trailing 24-23 and in danger of being down two sets to none, Olivia Alexander hammered home a kill to knot the set at 24. Classmate Kaylynne Nicholson followed up Alexander with a kill of her own, putting the Brits a point away from tying the match. Senior middle Jesse Hepner recorded a solo block, giving the visitors a 26-24 win.

Albion held all of the momentum in the third set, leading by as many as seven points. Tied at 15 with Alexander back to serve, the Britons rattled off a 7-0 run. A Hope service error eventually gave Albion the win.

An up and down fourth set went in favor of the hosts. Hope broke a 24-24 tie with two straight killa to force the decisive game five.

Hope broke out to a big lead, but Albion chipped away throughout the fifth. The comeback would fall just short, as Hope ended the Albion win streak at 12.

Defensively, it was a massive night for Jenna Schienke. The junior totaled a career-high 30 digs.

Chloe Webber had 17 kills as Nicholson added 15. Both Alexander and Hepner contributed 13 kills for the visitors. Hepner also had six total blocks while Alexander recorded a new career-best with five.

With 54 assists, Mariah Brenz sets a new career-high and leaves a mark for fourth in single game assists. She amassed 12 digs while libero Courtney Companion ended with 14.

Albion looks to restart their win streak on Saturday when they host a tri match with Trine and Franklin. At 11 a.m. the Britons will take on the Thunder before ending the day with Franklin at 3 p.m.
