Swim and dive takes second in tri-meet

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Back in action after a long holiday break, the Albion College swimming and diving teams returned to the pool at Calvin University. Both teams took second place in the tri-meet, made up of the Knights and Alma College.

Starting off the meet, both 400 medley relay teams placed fourth. The women's team of Alexis Glaser, Mattie Smith, Lauren Bailey and Mikala Muccino finished in 4:03.94. The men's squad of Brendan Ritchie, Nate Cobb, Declan Tharp and AJ Zako clocked in at 3:37.42.

In the 1650 free, Bryn Cavanaugh's time of 19:28.26 was good for second place. Also earning second on the men's side was sophomore Kelvin Crone-Willis, with a time of 16:16.36. Russell Brown(18:20.27) was fifth and Nick Johns placed sixth (18:30.6).

Olivia Perfili took fifth in the 200 yard free with a time of 2:07.59. Alyvia Martinez placed eight with a race of 2:14.83. For the men, Zako was fourth (1:50.74). Richard Pifer and Evan Steele also placed for the Brits.

Both the men's and women's teams took first in the 50 yard free. Sophomore Hannah Fathman continued her dominance, winning with a time of 24.50. Just behind her was teammate Sage Gettings, finishing in 25.10. Smith was eighth with a race of 26.02.

For the men, Billy Barr won with a time of 20.82. Ritchie also placed for Albion, clocking in at 22.29.

For the women, three Britons finished in the top eight in the 400 yard IM. Emma Henninges (fifth), Emma Frame (sixth) and Emily Evers (eighth) led the way for Albion. Cobb and Jalen Hung went 4-5 on the men's side.

In 1-meter diving, Sarah Weissman was second with a score of 184.35. Megan Shay was fourth for Albion (163.81), Sarah Stone placed fifth (156.15) while Mads Rais (155.58) was sixth. Weissman was second in the 3-meter dive, scoring a 168.44. Stone and Rais were fourth and fifth, respectively.

Back after injury, Justin Huttenlocher was second with a score of 247.13. He later placed second in the 3-meter dive with a score of 257.77.

Sarah Griffiths won the 200 yard butterfly with a time of 2:14.46. On the men's side, Crone-Willis's time of 2:03.86 earned him the victory. Brown took sixth for the Brits.

Cobb took eighth in the 100 yard freestyle (49.24).

Griffiths later went on to finish second in the 200 yard backstroke, clocking in at 2:17.54. She was followed by a fourth place finish from Glaser. As for the men, Pifer (fourth), Ritchie (sixth) and Brennen Curry (seventh) all placed.

With a time of 5:36.45, Cavanaugh won the 500 yard freestyle. Perfili was seventh in the event with a race of 5:48.01. In the men's race, Steele was fourth as Johns took sixth.

Smith won the 200 yard breaststroke, clocking in at 2:32.14. Evers added a fourth place finish for the Britons in the event. Tharp won the men's event, finishing in 2:12.74. Curry added a fourth place finish as well.

Rounding out the day, the women's 200 yard free relay team was third. The team was made up of Gettings, Cavanaugh, Muccino and Fathman. The men were also third, composed of Barr, Crone-Willis, Johns and Tharp.

On Saturday, Albion will have Senior Night in a meet against Olivet. The meet begins at 1 p.m.
