Volleybrits rally to knock off Adrian in five

ADRIAN, Mich. – It wasn't pretty, but they made it work.

Trailing two sets to none, the Albion College volleyball team made a feverish comeback to defeat Adrian College in five sets.

The story was all Adrian for the first two sets, as the Bulldogs worked their way to big leads in both of the opening sets. Things looked bleak early on for Albion, but a gritty and experienced group led the Britons back to earn the MIAA victory.

Holding on to a 21-19 lead in the third, the Brits used an attack error and an ace from Courtney Companion to create distance and eventually win the set 25-20.

Trailing 21-19 in the fourth, Albion rattled off six consecutive points to force a winner take all fifth set. In  that stretch, the Bulldogs committed five attack errors before an Olivia Alexander kill secured a fifth set.

Similar to the other sets, the visitors found themselves trailing in the fifth, but a resilient group grinded their way back. Down 8-6 at the side switch, the Britons outscored the hosts 9-1 over the final points to win the fifth, 15-9.

Alexander led the Albion offense with 15 kills, adding 20 digs from the back row. Both Kaylynne Nicholson and Carly Frank tacked on 10 kills apiece, as Mariah Brenz ran the offense with 41 assists.

Defensively, Paige Williamson's 26 digs led the Brits, as Companion (13) and Jenna Schienke (11) also contributed double-digit digs. Williamson also led Albion with three aces at the service line.

Once again, Ja'Nyece Larry was solid, totaling five blocks, six kills and six digs from the middle.

Albion is idle until Friday when they host Wheaton College for a 7 p.m. match. It will serve as senior night for the six seniors on Albion's roster.
