VB narrowly misses upset bid of No. 16 Transylvania

ALBION – It was another feverish fifth set comeback for the Albion College volleyball team, however this one came up short as the Brits lost in five to No. 16 Transylvania University on Saturday afternoon. Albion faced a 14-7 deficit in the fifth before falling 17-15. 

Down seven points and facing match point, Albion went on an 8-0 run, highlighted by a pair of aces from senior DS, Courtney Companion. After Albion took a 15-14 lead, the Pioneers scored the next three, as TU's Cate Scheper finished with three straight kills to silence the home team's momentum. 

Senior Olivia Alexander continued her monster year, ending with 20 kills to lead all players in the match. Kaylynne Nicholson and Ja'Nyece Larry each contributed 10, the only three Brits with double digit kills. 

With 48 assists, Mariah Brenz paced the offense as Paige Williamson's 22 digs led the defense. Brenz (15), Alexander (14) and Companion (10) all contributed 10-plus digs in the match. 

The Britons tallied 11 aces in the loss, with three apiece coming from Williamson and Companion. 

On Tuesday, the Britons head to Kalamazoo for a 7 p.m. matchup.
