CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. – In their biggest meet to date, the Albion College swim and dive teams put together some incredible performances at the Wabash Invitational. The three day long event saw the women placing sixth with 431 points, as the men's team was eighth with 229.
FRIDAY: Starting the day off, Albion's 200 yard freestyle relay team of Hannah Fathman, Mattie Smith, Bryn Cavanaugh and Sage Gettings took third with a time of 1:37.52. The men's team took eighth in the event, swimming a 1:29.19. The team was composed of Mason Rose, Richard Pifer, AJ Zako and Ethan Boersma.
Cavanaugh later swam a season-best in the 500 yard free with a time of 5:29.19. Junior Olivia Perfili also clocked a season-best time in the event with a race of 5:37.97.
Both Richard Pifer (4:57.68) and Kelvin Crone-Willis (4:58.28) swam the 500 free on the men's side.
Smith's incredible weekend continued when she took second in the 200 yard IM, clocking a personal best time of 2:09.04. Alexis Glaser competed with a time of 2:22.06. Sophomore Jalen Hung finished with a time of 2:04.98 in the men's 200 IM.
In the 50 yard free, Fathman swam a 23.79 for first in the event. Gettings was seventh for the Brits with a time of 24.67. On the men's side, Boersma finished with a time of 22.01.
SATURDAY: Albion started the day off with a win, thanks to the 200 yard medley relay team of Alexis Glaser, Smith, Gettings and Fathman. The quartet swam a 1:46.58 to win the event. With a swim of 1:34.64, the men's team of Canon Rose, Andrew Woods, Boersma and Pifer took eighth.
Crone-Willis was eighth in the 400 yard IM, finishing with a time of 4:17.47. Hung swam a 4:25.81 in the finals.
Gettings won the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 56.76. The senior was just shy of a NCAA B cut in the victory. Boersma turned in a second place finish in the men's event with a time of 50.53. Also placing in the top eight was Fahtman, who clocked a 59.38 in the women's race.
Cavanaugh, a senior, finished with a 2:04.48 in the 200 yard free. Pifer put together an incredible performance in his race, clocking in at 1:47.04 to take ninth.
Smith marked a NCAA B cut in the 100 yard breaststroke, setting a meet record and a PR of 1:04.30. The junior won the event, adding on to her weekend success. Freshman Alyssa Glaser turned in a solid race with a time of 1:10.57.
Woods also competed in the 100 yard breaststroke on the men's side, clocking in at 1:00.97.
In the 100 yard backstroke, Alexis Glaser finished with a time of 1:02.11.
In the diving events, Sarah Stone scored a 285.50 to finish seventh in the 3-meter dive. Jeremy Romero was eighth in the men's 1-meter dive with a score of 339.60.
Combining preliminaries and finals, there were 59 season-bests on the day.
SUNDAY: Swimming in the 1650 yard free, Crone-Willis took sixth with a time of 17:06.97. For the women. The Brits saw Cavanaugh (19:28.18) and Perfili (19:49.38) in the event.
Gettings won the 100 meter IM as the only swimmer to finish under a minute. The senior put together an incredible race of 59.28. Crone-Willis (59.70) and Owen Schaaf (58.84) represented the men's team.
With a time of 2:16.12, Alexis Glaser was the lone Albion competitor in finals in the 200 yard backstroke.
Fathman's time of 52.50 won her the 100 yard freestyle. Pifer raced as well for the men, clocking in with a time of 48.41.
Smith dominated the 200 yard breaststroke, winning the race as the number one seed from prelims. The junior clocked a time of 2:23.83. Woods turned in a finish of 2:15.97 for the men.
Sophomore Lauren Bailey swam a 2:25.75 in the 200 yard backstroke.
In the diving events, Stone took seventh in the 1-meter with a score of 318.20. Romero's score of 341.65 earned him an eighth place finish in the 3-meter dive.
Rounding out the weekend, the women's 400 free relay team of Fathman, Smith, Cavanaugh and Gettings was seventh, swimming a 3:39.25.
Albion will be idle from competitions until the new year, but will partake in a training trip over the holiday break.
