Four finish in double figures in home opening win

ALBION – In their 2023-24 home opener, the Albion College women's basketball team put on a show, knocking off Franklin College, 8-1-58. Four Britons scored in double figures, led by Ava Guilford's career night. 

Guilford scored 14 points, connecting on 4 of 5 3-pointers. The sophomore added a career-best eight assists as well as seven boards to her stat line. Junior transfer Brazyll Watkins dropped 19 points for Albion while grabbing eight assists. 

Through a tight first quarter, Emma Cooke's basket in the final seconds lifted the hosts to a 14-11 lead after one. Despite scoring just three points, Cooke brought down a game-high 10 rebounds in the win. 

In the second quarter, the Brits extended their lead to 30-20 before the break. Watkins scored the final three points of the half to push Albion up by double figures.

Out of the new half, Franklin was nailed for a technical foul, allowing Riley Davis to sink a pair of free throws before a second came off the clock. Davis ended the night with 13 points, six rebounds and blocked a pair of shots. 

In the third, Guilford scored nine points to boost the Briton lead to as many as 15 points. Heading into the final quarter, Albion held a sizable lead to control the remainder of the contest. 

Off the bench, Daniah Beavers added 14 points and seven rebounds. The senior was an efficient 6 of 7 from the field. 

Backed by Guilford, Albion was nearly 42 percent from beyond the arc. Additionally, Albon was almost 52 percent from the floor, while Franklin struggled. 

Albion improved to 4-1 overall, while the Grizzlies suffered their first setback, dropping to 2-1. 

On Nov. 29, Albion opens up MIAA play against Hope College. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
