Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Five finish in double figures as WBB starts 2024 with win

ALBION – We are so back.

In convincing fashion, the Albion College women's basketball team started 2024 with a win, defeating The University of Olivet, 75-52. Five Britons finished in double figures, led by 21 from Brazyll Watkins – her third 20-point game of the season.

Aided by a coast to coast and-one, Emma Cooke recorded her sixth double-double of the season, scoring 11 points and bringing down 12 boards. Cooke has a double-double in five of her last six contests.

Senior guard Riley Davis contributed 12 points, while Meghan Trewhella (11) and Daniah Beavers (10) also finished in double figures.

Albion jumped out to a big lead, thanks in part to a run late in the first quarter. The hosts held the Comets scoreless over the final two minutes of the period, going on a 6-0 run. Baskets from Lolo Reed and Beavers, along with a pair of Watkins free throws saw Albion leading 20-8 after one.

The Britons only stretched their lead in the second. After a three from Olivet cut the lead to 10, Watkins and Beavers combined for the next eight points, pushing Albion back in front by 18. By halftime, the Britons held a commanding 37-18 edge.

Olivet threatened a comeback in the third quarter, once again slicing the Albion lead to 10 points. Settling down over the final minutes of the period, Albion outscored Olivet 7-2 to end the quarter and lead 58-40 heading into the last 10 minutes. Five of Trewhella's 11 points came within that stretch.

Davis tacked on three blocks while Reed led all players with six assists. The Britons won the battle on the boards, outrebounding UO 47-37. Watkins brought down nine rebounds in the win – a career-best for the junior.

The Brits improve to 8-6 overall, 2-3 in the rugged MIAA. Olivet slips to 5-9, 2-3 in the league.

On Saturday, Albion continues MIAA action with the front half of a doubleheader at Adrian. Tip off against the Bulldogs is scheduled for 1 p.m.
