Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's hoops starts '24-25 victorious

ANGOLA, Ind. – Bolstered by career-highs and double-doubles, the Albion College women's basketball team started the 2024-25 campaign with a 48-42 victory over Allegheny College.

Emma Cooke started her senior year by scoring 18 points – including 12 fourth quarter points for the Brits. Her 18 points came in just 25 minutes of action, finishing 8 of 14 from the floor.

Freshman guard Brooklynn Tornes put on a performance in her first collegiate contest, recording 13 points and pulling down 13 rebounds. Meghan Trewhella also turned in a double-double, pouring in 11 points and securing 11 rebounds – both career-highs.

With an offensive board and a putback by Trewhella, Albion saw themselves in front by a 16-10 margin at the end of the first. The offensive rebound was one of five from Trewhella. Albion went on to build a lead as large as eight in the second, but the Gators put together a small run in the final minutes of the half. Ending on a 5-0 run, the Brits held just a 24-21 lead at halftime.

The two teams went back and forth throughout the third quarter, with Allegheny taking advantage of foul trouble by the Brits. With Cooke back in the lineup in the fourth, the senior post took over for 12 points in the final period.

Leading 41-40 with 2:26 to play, Cooke sank a big bucket to inflate the lead to three. Two possessions later, she connected on a pair of free throws, giving Albion a two-possession lead late in the game.

Led by Cooke and Trewhella, Albion had 21 second chance points. The Britons took care of the ball, ending with just eight turnovers while forcing the Gators into 23.

Both teams struggled from beyond the arc, combining to go 2 of 39 from deep.

Tomorrow, the Brits play the second day of the Cameron Hospital Classic with a 2 p.m. contest against Lake Forest.
