ALBION – The Albion College men's wrestling team saw three individual champions at the Albion Open on Sunday afternoon. Austin Matheney, Peyton Brooks and Owen McDaniel all went undefeated to win their weight class in a day that saw multiple Britons have spectacular days.

Junior Austin Matheney was a flawless 4-0 to win the 141 pound bracket. Of his four victories, three came with bonus points, highlighted by a 13-5 major decision in the championship bout.

Peyton Brooks also turned in an incredible 4-0 day to win at 165. An opening 13-1 major decision was followed by two falls – including one in the title bout (4:48).

At 184, Owen McDaniel was the champion with a 5-0 afternoon. Similar to Matheney, four of his five wins came with bonus points with three major decisions. In the final match, McDaniel grinded out an 8-6 win.

The Britons saw three compete at 125, led by Jeremy Sarter's second place finish. Sarter won 11-6 and 8-3, before a 4-1 sudden victory sent him into the championship bout. On the flip side, Sarter fell in sudden victory fashion in the title bout. Josh Mars was third, turning in a 4-1 afternoon. In the third place matchup, Mars earned a fall in 3:50. Freshman Benito Tinaj rounded out the weight class, going 2-2 with a pair of pins.

Junior Cade Odrobina was fourth at 133. He ended the day 3-2 with an 18-3 tech fall in the process.

At 141, Koen Eberhard was 2-2, including a pin in 4:18 and a gutsy 11-10 victory.

Xavier Carpenter finished sixth at 149. The freshman won his first three matchups, including a fall in 2:33.

Sophomore Justin Gorman took third in the 157 bracket. A quick 47 second fall was followed by a pair of tech falls. Coming off a loss, Gorman earned an 11-0 major decision to land a spot in the third place bout, ending with a 7-3 win.

At 174, Jack Smith took fourth and Owen Turnbow placed sixth. Smith started the day with a major decision before landing in the consolation bracket, ending 3-3 on the day. Turnbow was 2-3 overall, as both of his victories came via falls.

Joining McDaniel at 184 was Gary Iobe and Bernard Harrison. Harrison was the consolation champion, firing off five straight victories after dropping his opening match. Iobe ended the day 2-2.

Sophomore Demond Harrison was second in the 197 bracket. He went 2-1 with a tech fall and a major decision.

CJ Krum took second in the heavyweight bracket, as Colton Turk and Dawson Ransom also represented the Britons. Krum pinned two opponents and recorded a major decision until a heartbreaking 6-2 loss in the finals. Ransom was fifth on the day with a 3-1 win in his final bout. Turk, a sophomore, was 4-2 with multiple tight victories.

Albion will return to the mats next Saturday at the Olivet Duals.
