Women's basketball secures first conference victory

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Starting conference play with the toughest opponents, the Albion College women's basketball team righted the ship with a 54-47 victory over Kalamazoo College.

Emma Cooke was phenomenal, recording her second double-double of the season. The senior led the Brits with 14 points and corralled 15 rebounds. Ava Guilford stuffed the stat sheet with 11 points, two steals and four assists, going a perfect 6 of 6 from the charity stripe.

Albion exploded to an early lead, holding a 17-8 advantage through one quarter. Up by two, the visitors ended the opening period on a 7-0 run, culminating in a banked in three off the hand of Sydney Schoenborn. Kalamazoo slowly chipped away throughout the second quarter, seeing Albion's lead dwindle to five points by halftime.

As the teams traded buckets throughout the third, the Britons grew the lead in the fourth quarter to secure the conference win. The Britons got a huge defensive stop and turned it into a 3-pointer from Anja Kelley at the other end. With 3:26 on the clock, Albion held a nine point lead.

Freshman Brooklynn Tornes added 10 points and four assists to go along with four boards.

As a team, Albion turned in their best free throw percentage of the season, converting on 16 of 19 attempts (84.2 percent).

The Britons will head to the Trine Holiday Classic next week, beginning with a 6 p.m. contest on Thursday. Albion will face off against CCIW opponent Millikin.
