Men's wrestling takes third at Manchester

NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. – In their final non-conference tune-up, the Albion College men's wrestling team placed third at the Manchester Spartan Mat Classic. Owen McDaniel and Demond Harrison won their weight classes, as a handful of other Brits placed on Saturday.

The Britons went 1-2 at 184, with Owen McDaniel claiming champion honors and Gary Iobe as the runner-up. McDaniel pinned his opponent in 2:06 to earn a spot in the title bout, as Iobe had two falls (4:58, 4:17) in his run to the finals.

Demond Harrison ripped a record of 4-0 to win the 197 bracket. He pinned his first two opponents (1:47, 1:55) before two more wins to claim the victory. Also competing at 197 was Bernard Harrison, finding a top-three finish. The sophomore had three straight wins on his way to a third place finish.

At 125, Jeremy Sarter was the runner-up, turning in a 4-1 day. In three of his first four matches, Sarter won with bonus points in a 22-5 tech fall and major decision wins of 13-4 and 16-5.

Also taking second place was Max Honiss at 149. En route to the championship bout, the senior recorded a fall, tech and a major.

Sophomore Koen Eberhard placed sixth at 141. Dropping his opening bout, he won three straight matchups with a pin in 4:35 and a pair of major decisions (20-6, 20-9).

Justin Gorman was the fourth place finisher at 157. On the day, the sophomore picked up a tech fall to go along with two gritty decisions.

Two wrestlers represented the Brits at 174 in Zak Knapp and Jack Smith. Knapp placed fourth overall, earning two tech falls and a major decision Saturday. Smith was 0-2.

Colton Turk went 0-2 in the heavyweight bracket.

On Thursday, Albion kicks off MIAA action with a 7 p.m. dual at home against Alma College.
